Description: An estimated 63% of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Tribal areas involve roadway departure. This presentation will review roadway departure crash data for Tribal areas, describe how the systemic approach can help address roadway departure, and provide an overview of the FHWA's focus on reducing rural roadway departures (FoRRRwD) initiative. The presentation briefly discusses changes being planned for the FY21 Tribal Transportation Program Safety Fund to encourage addressing rural roadway departure.

Adam Larsen has worked in the Federal Highway Administration Office of Tribal Transportation since 2011. His duties include providing safety technical assistance to Tribal Governments and managing the Tribal Transportation Program Safety Fund. Adam serves as a co-chair of the Tribal Transportation Safety Management System Steering Committee where transportation safety needs are addressed by members from multiple federal agencies and Tribes. Adam is also a certified trainer for the National Highway Institute. Adam led the Tribal Transportation Safety Management System Steering Committee in the development of two reports to Congress. One report assesses the quality of safety data in Tribal areas and recommends improvements. The other report identifies seven priority topics that must be addressed to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes in Tribal areas. These reports are available at www.TribalSafety.org/Reports.
